Cape Bretoners are famous for asking someone new they meet, “Who’s your father?” We like to know where and who someone comes from to get to know and understand them better. And so it is with Jesus. To really understand Jesus, who he was and why he came, we need to know who is father is. And not just Joseph, or God the Father in heaven, but his whole family and their history, going all the way back to the beginning of creation. This Advent season, we will take a journey through the Old Testament, getting to know the people and the stories in Jesus family history. We will do this by going through readings that come to us by way of the Jesse Tree. The Church has a long history of using the Jesse Tree, telling the story of God from creation to Jesus, using scripture and symbols. It helps us see and understand the big picture of the story of God in and through his people. As we take this trip from creation to Bethlehem each morning starting December 1, may God work in our hearts to deepen and grow our faith this Advent season.
